What to do when you’re on the road > RV Daily Report |
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The three groups of people most at risk during a tornado are those who are outdoors, those in mobile/manufactured homes and those on the road in vehicles. The National Weather Service has issued a guide on how to handle severe weather situations on the road.
Being in a vehicle:
Inside vehicles — cars, trucks, sport utility vehicles, recreational vehicles, tractor-trailer rigs, boats, trains, planes, etc. — are terrible places to be when a severe thunderstorm threatens. Fortunately, these situations can be avoided most of the time by being alert to the possibility of severe storms and tornadoes.
All types of vehicles can be blown over, rolled, crushed, lifted, or otherwise destroyed by even a weak tornado. People have been hurt or killed when large trees crushed their cars.
Safety tips:
1. Consider delaying your trip if severe thunderstorms are in the area or along your path of travel.
2. Monitor television, radio, NOAA weather radio, and the Web for storm location information.
3. Be familiar with the area where you’re traveling. Keep a highway map handy that includes the county names and boundaries. National Weather Service severe weather warnings are issued based on counties. If you do not know what county you’re in you could miss lifesaving information.
4. If you’re in your car, find a station broadcasting weather information. Some stations will interrupt programming to broadcast warnings and other information.
Dangers:
The chances of being hit directly by a tornado in your car are very small. However, severe thunderstorms contain other elements that can threaten your life.
1. Hail: Severe thunderstorms can produce hail as big as baseballs or softballs. These chunks of ice, falling at over 100 mph, will break car windshields and dent vehicles. Get off the roadway if possible, and find shelter underneath an awning, a carwash or other structure. Abandon your vehicle if possible and get into a sturdy structure. Do not park underneath highway overpasses or bridges. You could cause a deadly traffic jam, preventing others from reaching safe shelter and blocking emergency vehicles.
2. Wind: Severe thunderstorms can produce devastating straight-line winds, as strong, or even stronger than most tornadoes. Any vehicle may be overturned by severe thunderstorm winds. Get off the road, if possible, and find a sturdy building to take shelter in.
3. Heavy rain and flooding: Even non-severe thunderstorms can produce excessive rainfall in a very short period of time that can flood roadways and low-water crossings. Avoid areas where water is covering the roads.
Taking shelter outdoors:
If the tornado is far enough away and road options and traffic allow, you should try to find a substantial building for shelter. Follow the basic tornado safety guidelines (get in, get down, cover up).
Motorists have found truck stops, convenience stores, restaurants and other businesses to be adequate shelters in a tornado situation. Walk-in coolers can sometimes make a good shelter.
While you should never try to outrun a tornado in your vehicle, you may, in some situations, be able to get out of the tornado’s way by driving out of its path, or stopping and allowing it to pass.
Again, this can be extremely dangerous unless traffic, time of day and road options allow you to see the tornado, determine which way it’s moving (and how fast), find a road option that will take you out of its path (while avoiding other storms) and to a safe shelter.
The worst-case scenario for motorists would be to be trapped in your vehicle on the road with no escape possible. This scenario could occur in more densely populated areas, in metropolitan areas at rush-hour or in high-traffic situations, or on limited access roadways, such as interstates or turnpikes where it might not be possible to quickly find safe shelter. It may become necessary in these situations to leave your vehicle and seek shelter in a low spot.
Highway overpasses are not tornado shelters, and these should be avoided.
Ditches, culverts, and ravines should be used only as an absolute last resort. You will be exposed to flying debris, rain, hail, lightning and extreme wind. People have survived by seeking shelter in ditches, but people have also died.
If you must leave your vehicle to seek shelter in a ditch, you should try to get as far away from the vehicle, as well as any other potential debris, as possible.

How-to RV show carves niche in online entertainment > RV Daily Report |

HARRELLS, N.C. — If you own an RV now, or have ever considered purchasing an RV you owe it to yourself to watch a new Internet RV how-to TV series titled “Mark’s RV Garage,” RV Education 101 said today.
Video producer, RVer and host Mark Polk teaches new and experienced RVers how to use, maintain and accessorize their RV in this entertaining and information packed 30-minute television style online show.
In each episode of the new show there are segments on RV product reviews, RV product installations, easy RV upgrades, questions and answers, camping destinations, and RV trivia. The feature segment in each episode is a vintage trailer restoration project Polk is doing from start to finish.
The show can be viewed by visiting http://rvvideosondemand.com/?page_id=307.
“The viewer response is incredible; people especially like the vintage restoration project segment,” said Polk. “Things started off a little slow, but as the word spreads views have steadily increased with each new show episode we release.
“Over the past eight weeks we have released four episodes, and between hosting the show on one of our sites, and on You Tube, we have had over 23,500 views to date collectively.
Polk explained the current plans for the new show are to produce one season of 8 to 10 episodes, and then take a short break while they film new episodes for season two.
Mark and Dawn Polk own RV Education 101, a video production and information company specializing in RV instructional DVDs on how to use and maintain RVs. They also released a brand new website earlier this year designed specifically for RV consumers at www.rvconsumer.com.
“We are the RV consumer advocates,” Polk said. “Folks in the RV industry build RVs and sell RVs, but I have always felt there was a huge lack of educating the RV consumer on how to properly use the RV after the consumer purchases it. That’s what we do, we work very hard to educate the RV consumer.
” With more than 18 DVD titles in our RV training library, and books and e-books, we felt the only place left to go was to produce a TV style RV “how-to” show for RVers to enjoy and learn from,” he added.

CUMMING, Ga. – After completing a $1 million facelift, the Shady Grove Campground in Forsyth County will officially reopen March 28, Access North Georgia reported.
The Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Department made several improvements to the 109-acre campground which has 110 campsites.

We are looking forward to hearing how campers enjoy these improvements.”
Power and water were added to campsites that were previously without the amenities, and a grassy play area was developed. The campground’s shoreline was restored as well.
