BENTON, Ky. — Ford RV Refrigeration Training Center is seeing a vast increase in the number of people interested in reconditioning RV refrigerators, the company announced today.
“To our surprise, this year’s report has already shown record hits of 10,000 a month,” said Onna Lee Ford, co-owner for Ford RV Refrigeration. “We believe our efforts to educate RV owners has increased numbers in the RVRN network of RV refrigerator specialists.”
Ford RV Refrigeration has surveyed hundreds of RV owners at the Affinity Group rallies and at other trade shows and seminars. “The results are 100 percent positive that RV owners would prefer to have their RV refrigerators reconditioned by an RVRN member because of the savings and warranty these members provide,” said Ford.
The Fords have written two books on RV refrigerators. In January 2011, they celebrated the first year anniversary of “Average Joe’s RV Refrigerator Troubleshooting & Repair Guide.” This book, which is sold nationwide, has created a new awareness among RV owners who are now searching for this unique service in their areas. Some have even obtained the RV refrigerator reconditioning training from Ford RV, she added.
Ford RV Refrigeration Training Center offers free monthly seminars to RV club members. This seminar educates RV owners on their RV refrigerator in areas of proper diagnosing and easy repairs they can do themselves. The Ford’s also cover myths and truths about these refrigerators and ways RV owners can save hundreds to thousands of dollars and receive a warranty.
This seminar has been given at the Affinity Group’s Thee Rally, the SMART Muster, and others.
“RV owners are amazed and very thankful to receive this free information,” said Roger Ford, co-owner of Ford RV Refrigeration.

ARC to participate in 2011 Healthy Parks Healthy People > RV Daily Report |

WASHINGTON – American Recreation Coalition (ARC) President Derrick Crandall will participate in next week’s Healthy Parks Healthy People 2011 session April 5 to 6 at Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
Convened by National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis, the session will bring together 100 or so other innovators, experts, and visionaries from the national parks, and the recreation and health communities. The aim is to forge new partnerships and strengthen the nexus between public lands and public health.
For several years, ARC has been a leading proponent of promoting the connections between better health and time spent in the great outdoors and has supported investing health care dollars in outdoor recreation sites including parks, said Crandall. And that effort is being recognized at the highest levels in Washington and beyond.
According to the letter from Director Jarvis, “There is a growing body of evidence that open spaces and natural places play a very real role in health.”
The event is being co-hosted with the Institute at the Golden Gate, which issued Park Prescriptions, profiling key programs linking health and the great outdoors, just last year.
“ARC is very pleased with the strides the NPS has taken — and this is another step forward in raising the profile on health and the great outdoors,” Crandall said.
Jarvis said he plans to address many of the ideas and issues the ARC has been advocating for some time, including:
- How national, state and local parks can combine forces with business innovators, healthcare leaders, scientists, and advocacy organizations to promote wellness and reduce health care costs;
- How we can influence a cultural shift to value parks for health;
- What community leaders and managers can learn from experts and visionaries in order to make this a sustainable idea that affects behavior at its core; and
- How human health is dependent on the health of all species and the planet we share, and in what ways parks and open spaces can strengthen these connections.
The opening session April 5 at 9 a.m. and the closing session April 6 at 11:45 a.m. both feature 30-minute remarks by Director Jon Jarvis. People can join a live webcast at www.ustream.tv/channel/hphpUS.
The American Recreation Coalition provides a unified voice for recreation interests to ensure their full and active participation in government policy-making on issues such as public land management, energy, and liability. They are also involved in stimulation of partnerships between federal agencies and companies to provide quality recreation opportunities; leadership in developing sources of supplemental income and other resources for public land and water management agencies; coordinating Recreation Exchanges, Partners Outdoors conferences, Great Outdoors Month in June, and National Get Outdoors Day June 11.

Senators introduce U.S. Outdoor Act > RV Daily Report |

BOULDER, Colo. — The Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) hailed today’s introduction of Senate Bill 704, the U.S. Outdoor Act, by Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID).
The legislation is OIA’s signature trade initiative and is the realization of several years of development and consultation between OIA, outdoor industry apparel manufacturers, the U.S. textile industry and the bill’s Senate sponsors.
Original cosponsors include Senators Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Michael Enzi (R-WY), Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR).
“OIA, Senator Wyden and Senator Crapo have worked for several years with a variety of stakeholders to develop this well balanced legislation that invests in the outdoor recreation economy and supports our industry’s core mission of environmental awareness and sustainability,” said OIA President and CEO Frank Hugelmeyer. “We believe that this bill will encourage innovation, lower costs for outdoor companies, create jobs in the United States and, promote outdoor recreation on America’s public lands by making quality outdoor apparel more affordable for Americans seeking to get outside. We look forward to seeing the U.S. Outdoor Act enacted.”
A recent study by The Outdoor Foundation found that among young adults ages 18 to 24, hesitation about spending money on gear and equipment is the third most cited reason limiting outdoor activities, The U.S. Outdoor Act specifically addresses an unnecessary barrier to participation in outdoor activities by Americans. The disproportionately high tariffs assessed against recreational performance outerwear can add as much as 28 percent to its retail cost.
“The U.S. Outdoor Act is about encouraging our kids and members of our community to get outside, to be active, and to appreciate and protect our natural treasures,” Senator Wyden said. “This is good for U.S. manufacturers that are a significant participant in the outdoor apparel supply chain, as well as to American consumers who bear the brunt of those high tariffs.”

OMAHA, Neb. — The Oracle of Omaha has done it again, says the Wall Street Journal. In a blog by Gregory Corcoran, the newspaper publishes the latest letter Warren Buffett has written to shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway.
In the letter, Buffett writes, “Forest River, our RV and boat manufacturer, had record sales of nearly $2 billion and record earnings as well. Forest River has 82 plants, and I have yet to visit one (or the home office, for that matter). There’s no need; Pete Liegl, the company’s CEO, runs a terrific operation. Go RVing Study by Harris Interactive Identifies Marketing Communications Messages that Can Motivate RV Buyers
Go RVing Study by Harris Interactive Identifies Marketing Communications Messages that Can Motivate RV Buyers
edited by: Phil Ingrassia, CAE
A new survey by Harris Interactive examining which factors most influence RV purchase decisions shows that messages focusing on family togetherness and cost savings now resonate equally with potential RV buyers. The survey also revealed positive attitudes about health and wellness benefits of RVing, which may help persuade non-owners to buy.
The survey of 1,006 non-RV owners and 357 RV owners was commissioned by Go RVing to understand how RVs and RV travel are perceived, what benefits RV owners experience, and which of these benefits would be most effective in convincing a non-owner to buy. This data is being used to fine-tune Go RVing messaging to reinforce the value of RVing to current owners, and to motivate consumers to purchase an RV in the future.
Survey results show that a majority of non-RV owners (67 percent) agree that RVing allows families to spend quality time together, and to spend more time outdoors enjoying nature. Messages about family togetherness also received a strong positive response from past RV owners and survey respondents who said they were considering a future RV purchase.
But, the cost savings offered by RVing also has a strong appeal. Three-fourths (74 percent) of RV owners agree with the findings of RVIA’s Vacation Cost Comparison research showing that RVers save 27-to-61 percent on a typical family vacation. The same proportion (73 percent) of potential future RV buyers said that knowing about the cost savings would make them more likely to buy.
Also appealing to past RV owners (75 percent) and those with RV purchase plans (67 percent) were messages that RVs are becoming smaller, lighter and more fuel efficient. Recent product innovations are positioning the industry to potentially bring back former RVers and to make inroads with non-owners who are considering a purchase.
The survey also offered insight about which benefits of RVing are the strongest purchase motivators. A strong proportion of potential future RV buyers said that these factors would make them more likely to buy:
- RVers save 27 to 61 percent on a typical family vacation — 73 percent
- Couples who RV develop stronger bonds with each other — 68 percent
- RVing allows you to be more physically active — 67 percent
- RVing provides an escape from everyday pressure and stress — 65 percent
- Kids who travel with their families by RV receive educational benefits — 58 percent
- Traveling by RV reduces exposure to illnesses and other health risks — 56 percent
Majorities of past RV owners (61 percent) and potential future RV owners (59 percent) agreed that investing in an RV now will enable people to travel affordably and frequently in retirement.
Participation in outdoor recreation shows encouraging growth
Greg Gerber posted on May 21, 2010 13:21
WASHINGTON – In 2009, American participation in outdoor recreation was marked by encouraging growth in important segments of core outdoor activities, according to a new report, Outdoor Recreation Participation Top Line Report for 2010, released today by Outdoor Foundation.
The 2010 Topline Report details recent participation trends in outdoor recreation for Americans ages 6 and older and illustrates ongoing adjustments in American lifestyles brought about by the challenging economy and changing demographics.
Initial data from the study shows that general participation in “core” outdoor sports and activities increased 3.3 percent to 100.7 million participants. Cost-effective categories continued with strong increases. Those activities that can be “done in a day” and fit in with busy schedules continued to post increases in activity: camping, hiking, running and bicycling.
The economy in 2009 had a major impact on spending in sports, fitness and recreation. Only more than 4.5% percent of active participants said they had spent more than in 2008, with the biggest decreases coming from equipment and travel. However, looking forward to 2010, there are positive signs with significant numbers of respondents set to increase spending in those categories.
“We see the economy driving people back to nature. This has tremendous implications for health and wellness issues surrounding the sharp increases in childhood obesity,” said Christine Fanning, executive director of Outdoor Foundation. “Outdoor recreation is finally being recognized as part of the solution. Our position is that nature should be the first prescription.”
Overall activity levels illustrates that while 77 percent percent of Americans age 6 and older took part in at least one activity that left 64 million people who are inactive. Over 50 percent of Americans take part in no activities at all or are infrequent participants.
The study also shows that activities at school age have shown to be a major factor in determining future outdoor recreation participant levels. While three quarters of respondents took part in physical education at school, just over a third took part in outdoor activities. Physical education at school continues to be a pathway to an active adulthood.
With the vital outdoor recreational information detailed within the study, Outdoor Foundation provides youth organizations, public agencies, businesses and non-profits with insights needed to increase outdoor participation. Effective outreach programs and creative campaigns must be top priorities for every sector of society if we are to inspire and grow the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts.
“While it is certainly encouraging to see an increase in participation in some important recreation categories, more must be done to help youth reclaim, redefine and rediscover the outdoors,” continued Fanning, noting that it’s been four years since the Richard Louv’s seminal book “Last Child in the Woods” was published. “Our new program, Outdoor Nation, and our first Youth Summit in New York in June is a way for CEOs to start thinking about investing in the next generation of outdoor industry executives and launching programs to support youth in the outdoors.”
Outdoor Foundation’s 2010 Outdoor Recreation Participation Topline Report details Americans’ participation in outdoor activities from 2008 to 2009. The report is a high level overview of the foundation’s full participation report, which will be released later this year with expanded data and full analysis.
Outdoor Foundation’s Outdoor Recreation Participation Report is the only detailed study of its kind tracking American participation trends in outdoor recreation. The study is based on an on-line survey capturing responses from more than 40,000, Americans ages 6 and older and covers a variety of outdoor activities.
